This is Hindu God Lord Shiva, commonly known as the destroyer. Shiva destroyers, but what does he destroy? Conventionally, destruction is linked with the breakdown of things, with rage and anger. But this deity is calm and composed, lost in his own word. His eyes are downcast, half-shut, as if he is not interested in looking at those who seek his audience. He is withdrawn. How can he be a destroyer?
The problem lies with our understanding of destruction. What does Shiva destroy? Sacred scriptures tell us repeatedly that he is Kamataka, Yamantaka and Tripurantaka destroyer of Kama, destroyer of Yama and destroyer of Tripura, which means destroyer of desire, destroyer of death and destroyer of the three worlds.
